Clinic Synopsis

In 2015, Glen Adsit undertook a monumental commissioning project by organizing and launching the Institute for the Advancement of Secondary and Primary Repertoire Excellence (ASPIRE). This project brought together more than fifty middle school, high school, and college music educators in a consortium designed to commission groundbreaking composers to write a grade 2-4 pieces for band. Over the course of nearly ten years, the project has successfully commissioned twelve of the nation’s leading composers including William Bolcom, Donald Grantham, Anthony Barfield, Gilda Lyons, Zhou Tian, Shuying Li, and Steven Bryant to contribute works. Still in progress, the project will deliver the final piece in 2025. Rusty Koenig, the current organizer of the project, will present an overview of the project, a discussion of the pieces already produced, the plan for the conclusion of the project, and lessons learned for educators who may be interested in commissioning composers for their bands.
